The Young One plot
Miller lives on an isolated island off the coast of Carolina. The only other islander is Evvie, an innocent and naive 13-year-old girl. Miller is sexually attracted to her. When Traver, a black musician on the run from a gang that wants to lynch him after being falsely accused of rape, arrives on the island, Miller immediately turns him in to get him out of the way. However, Evvie likes Traver very much and protects him. When a preacher arrives on the island to take Evvie back to the mainland, Traver's presence is noticed. Miller now has to choose between turning Traver in, at the risk of Evvie losing her sympathy, and hiding Traver's identity.

Pretty good Buñuel. Although many critics seem to want to emphasize how complex this film deals with racism, in my opinion that is not so bad. The separation between the good black and the bad redneck is still a bit too clear for me. Fortunately, Buñuel does get a lot out of it and especially the power struggle in the middle section is very exciting and well-developed and the pedophile plot adds a lot to the depth of the story. In addition, it is one of Buñuel's most beautifully shot films. Less observant than usual: an attempt is made to get as much as possible out of the special location. The acting is a bit of a disappointment: these are clearly not the best of the Hollywood stable.
