Innocence plot

"The end of innocence...the beginning of life."

The key goes in the lock, the coffin opens and there lies naked, 6-year-old Iris. Very much alive, like a newborn child in the midst of a group of little girls with plaits in white dresses. Her new world consists of a rustic school building in a walled, fairytale-like park. Disobedience is punished and whoever tries to flee must stay forever. Iris clings to 12-year-old Bianca who has to go to a secret meeting every night at nine o'clock.

Very fine review.

It hasn't really changed much since the first time I saw the movie. It remains a difficult to grasp, mysterious film that mainly shows rather than interprets. That is left to the viewer, so any explanation often says more about the viewer than about the film itself.

Visually it remains strong, but you can expect that from Debie. Soundtrack is also very atmospheric and the acting also contributes to the atmosphere, although I suspect that not everyone will be happy with the sometimes somewhat wooden girls.

The influences in this film, however, remain somewhat of a strange story. Based on Mine-haha, but anyone who has ever seen Haibane Renmei can hardly ignore the parallels. However, that series made it to Hard-boiled Wonderland. But both are also mainly independent, so that one never resembles a copy of the other.

4.0* and a extended review

It must be a metaphor: the loss of childhood innocence, budding sexuality, the transition into young adulthood... something like that (?). Even then I can't place everything, but that didn't bother me, here it is best to fill in a few things by the spectator himself.

Beautiful atmospheric images, with a (slightly) dark undertone, without being able to explain exactly why. The children all act very convincingly, and in terms of the overall atmosphere the comparison with Picnic at Hanging Rock is somewhat obvious.

Of course I wondered for a long time what would be behind that wall: a winter forest, with some gunshots and barking dogs in the distance... nothing special really... bizarre (God knows what Spielberg is about this would have made ).

No, in the end I can't do enough with it. I must also honestly say that I am not a fan of child actors and then you will get away with it very badly, with dozens of children and not even a handful of adults. The acting is not good, because well, children (of course there are good child actors, but not many at the same time).
The strength of the film lies in the mystery. What are we looking at? Why does what happened, how did it come about, what is the purpose? On the one hand frustrating that there is no answer to this, on the other hand the charm. There is little story because of this, more a sequence of scenes. In my opinion half of the film is filled with ballet and swimming scenes. The imaging is strong, but dullness is lurking, partly due to the slow pace. Somewhere in the distance an uncomfortable sexual and/or obscure charge threatens, but it never emerges. Perhaps this is one of those movies where I missed a lot of symbolism.
