Two of the leading faces of Australian cinema make their breakthroughs in this drama based on the 1901 novel of the same name by Miles Franklin. Judy Davis is phenomenal in her film debut as Sybylla Franklin, a headstrong and (by her own admission) undesirable young woman who, despite family pressure, is determined to choose whether and who she marries. Her aunt Helen [Wendy Hughes], who herself married for love but has been abandoned by her husband and carries the shame with her, advises Sybylla to marry Frank Hawdon [Robert Grubb], a wealthy but dull young man. But then Sybylla meets Harry Beecham [Sam Neill], a handsome, charming man who is impressed by Sybylla's energy and zest for life. But he too must come from a good family to win Sybylla's heart.

It’s easy to see why Davis (who won two BAFTAs for her work) and Neill have become some of the best-known Australian character actors of their generation. Their chemistry is one of the main reasons to see this highly entertaining film. Another is the stunning location work and attention to period detail.
