"WANTED for desertion! WANTED for questioning!...WANTING only each other!"
Police are trying to register a poor French girl in Paris as a prostitute because she cannot identify herself. American soldier Robert Teller wants to help her out by marrying her, but his superiors thwart his plan.

Black-and-white film about the failed relationship between an American soldier and a Parisian girl, shortly after the liberation.
Quite dramatized and actually really hard to grasp just how chaotic the social situation was at that time.
Kirk Douglas acts well, as we know him, and so do his co-stars, with a still very young BB in an equally tiny supporting role.

A still young Kirk Douglas—well, certainly not his first film; he had already been active as an actor for about eight years. But he clearly hasn't lost his youthful edge here, even though he must have been around 37 by now. Anyway, he named this film as one of those he was most proud of. It's a pity I couldn't find out why he felt that way.
Because as a film, I actually can't really find it anything special – the story has the depth of a romance novel, despite the reference to Les Mis and a rather pointless scene in prison. And there are some nice moments in it, but it is also a somewhat lazy and cheap production with mostly indoor scenes – the few shots outside in Paris actually add just that little bit, and if there had been two or three times as much of that, the film would still be much more enjoyable to watch now. As it is, it is really only about Douglas, and very, very perhaps in the distance about Robin.
The denouement is perhaps a bit too rushed, too hurried—as if a scene got cut during editing. But perhaps that is precisely what makes it strong. Fast-paced and gritty, I quite like that. It does leave a bit of an open question as to exactly what the title means—who committed an 'act of love' here? Certainly not the captain; with all due poetic license, I wouldn't call that love. Not Private Teller either, and besides, it all just happens to him. Lise, then? You'd better explain.
By the way, you don't need to watch for BB at all; she has a very small and meaningless role as a barmaid. You have to pay very close attention to see her, otherwise you'll miss her.
