Katie, the Irish daughter of a large landowner, falls in love with South African Paul van Riebeck, who is a guest at her father's estate. At some point, Paul returns to his homeland to fight. When famine strikes in Ireland, Katie, who is now married to John, goes with her husband to South Africa. Here she meets Paul again, but someone else has a crush on her.
