I remembered a terrible, not too good b-movie, but when I reviewed it, it was not too bad. With beautiful sets: everything looks detailed, old and nice and dirty. The idea of the "used future" from Star Wars has been well adopted. The effects are good and thank god there's no cgi, that's the nice thing about an early 90's movie. I could stand protagonist Michael Pare just fine and the music is also decent.

Biggest flaws are Leon Rippy's sweaty pig head as the Sergeant and Cookieman Stephen Geoffreys' hair. Furthermore, a somewhat rushed ending (Stone's shuttle is destroyed how did he travel back?).

Nice (and not always pretty) details:
- Neanderthal Brian Thompson who happily announces that he has finished reading the literary book of sonnets, this one is the most to tear you to;
-Almost everyone is constantly sweaty. It must have smelled good on set. Maybe there will be a lack of good air conditioning in the future? You see old-fashioned ventilators...
-All navigators are nerds, all pilots are pumped-up gym boys;
-All doors have a built-in steam engine: maybe they had quite a few from the disco era on sale;

Nerd Dean Devlin would later go on to work permanently with Roland Emmerich.

I didn't think it was that bad. Certainly didn't look clumsy: the Sci-Fi atmosphere looked nice, even a bit Blade Runner-esque in some scenes, and although it's not much at all, it's still entertaining. You can see that this is a blueprint for Emmerich's later films. The lad getting his poop caught by the tough prisoner is a cliché to laugh out loud with. Strangely enough, it's the action scenes that fall short in Moon 44. The final scene in which the base is attacked by the competition really didn't look good. You also have a lot of supporting actors in the lead role, such as Brian Thompson in his umpteenth rough mindless role and Michael Paré who has even less charisma than a sack of potatoes. Still, given the limited budget, I don't think the film is a total failure.

Visually still quite worthwhile, with attractive Aliens-like production design and nice technical gadgets, but in terms of content this is not exactly the case. The cast doesn't make much of it either. Dean Devlin, later with Emmerich responsible for big hits such as Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla, is one of the protagonists here and does not do a bad job at all. If only that could be said of the rest of the actors. Anyway, with Malcolm McDowell and Stephen Geoffreys in the cast, the film is of course immediately cult.
