Captivating slasher in which the story is presented to the viewer very vaguely. Several reasons are the cause. Firstly, the lines between reality and fiction are thin, but also the identities and characters are constantly blurring. The world of the actresses. Secondly, a lot of strange things happen that make the identity of the murderer unclear, which benefits the tension. And finally, the various characters provide the necessary hysteria. The kills may not be very well portrayed, although the one of the skater is nice. But the film has other successful horror elements such as the scary cool mask. the scene with that doll on the road, the scenes in the asylum and the cool long escape of an actress who makes her way between dolls and curtains. Very nicely done.

The film also lingers and that is a good sign. Some puzzle pieces remain, but you can still put most of them together. I also found that ending very successful. 7/10

80s slasher.

We've probably all seen some of it, probably the more well-known titles. Curtains is not the least known of its kind, but in turn it's certainly not the most well-known either. Does that matter? Not really, but it does create certain expectations about the production of the film.

In this case, Curtains looks for things a bit deeper than you would think. The story actually has some early twists, although these are not very surprising. They are mainly more striking moments to support a more basic event. The core lies more in the hacking from a murderer who comes across as somewhat more unusual, but is anything but impressive.

The murders, apart from a single atmospheric event with the head in the toilet, are also disappointing. Offscreen and still a bit tame to let it rise as a whole. The acting is also rather sad to say the least. Not unknown in this type of film, but if the characters themselves come across as completely uninteresting as the driver, there won't be much left anytime soon.

All in all it is on the mediocre side, but nevertheless it has enough highlights to not end up completely in the pit of oblivion. There are quite a few moments that work reasonably, but these moments are nevertheless scarce. More graphic violence and better characters could have easily supported the quite interesting setting, but director Ciupka misses those big (and necessary) opportunities.

This Canadian slasher had a conflicting production where director Richard Ciupka and producer Peter R. Simpson each had a different vision: arthouse vs. commercial slasher. Eventually Ciupka left and Simpson's vision was followed after half of the film had already been shot. Despite these troubles, a nice result on screen. The transitions with the curtains give the film an artificial vibe that fits the narrative about the casting of actresses. The characters are interesting enough to keep that story on track. It is a slasher and so there is some killing. A lot happens off screen where the suggestion is more important than the special effects. For me that is okay because I attach more importance to building up tension and that is successful here. For me this film is certainly above the level of mediocrity thanks to the beautiful chase sequence in the finale that has Bava traits. The music is by Paul Zaza - usual suspect of horror soundtracks.
