The film was made for $750,000 and it shows. The monstrous brain, which is the threat in the film and from which the film takes its title, does not look particularly scary. Is that a bad thing? No, because the film does not take itself seriously at all. The film is full of ironic humor, has ridiculous storylines and contains a number of scenes with such cheap effects that you can only watch them and laugh. Effects in which puppets, rubber props, animatronics and stop motion play a role. They look lousy. They also evoke a wonderfully pleasant feeling. Nice. Nice.

Beneath that layer of fun, there is a brief serious layer. The film contains some biting social criticism, which is wrapped in a light-hearted way. Responsible for that is “Mad Scientist” David Gale, who played a similar role in the entertaining Re-Animator (1985). His appearances in the brainwashing TV broadcasts “Independent Thinking”, in which he plays the viewing cattle en masse, are small independent highlights among all the mindless rubber violence.

With the fun and enjoyment data in mind, the film is a pleasure to watch. And if you as a viewer have fun, you will quickly judge a film more mildly than it perhaps deserves in an objective sense. The film has enough weak details that are easily and willingly overlooked by the fun that the film radiates. For example, the acting is of course very mediocre, the story is very thin and the playing time is too long so that the fun at the end secretly feels rather forced.

Oh. Whining. Manufacturing mindless entertainment that is fun and easy to watch is just clever.

Some people think this is a great movie because everything is just wrong in this movie. The story, the progression, the dialogues, the cast, the terrible music and the ridiculous monster. Yes, sometimes these kinds of movies can be entertaining, but this one certainly isn't. I couldn't do anything with the ironic undertone and the whole amateurish stuff. George Buza constantly having to run after the victims started to irritate me towards the end and it just looked ridiculous. The little bit of nudity and the kills don't lift the movie either. 3/10

Reviewed on Blu-ray from 101BlackLabel.

We follow the unruly Jim who, by agreement of the school board and his parents, is sent to the Psychological Research Institute (which looks like a NASA space base). This is run by Director Dr. Blake, who according to the advertisements specializes in unruly youngsters. What they do not know is that Blake is hiding a gigantic alien brain-like creature here that feeds on human brain waves. He does this through his popular TV show "Independent Thinkers". The inhabitants of the town are, as it were, mentally enslaved. His goal is world domination. His two accomplices are the creep Verna and the topless slut Vivian. Jim seems to be the only one who can resist the waves of the creature.

Reasonable Canadian lowbudget SF horror with a cool synthesizer soundtrack. The scene in the beginning with the daughter in the bedroom could have been straight out of a Nightmare of Elmstreet movie. All in all quite entertaining and with only 87 minutes it is easy to watch.
