The Nest plot

"Roaches have never tasted flesh... until now. She's just an appetizer."

The quiet town of North Port has a roach problem. Sheriff Tarbell believes the experiments conducted by INTEC Corp. are the cause of this. His fears are confirmed when Dr. Hubbard of INTEC arrives on the scene. But displeasure and irritation turn to fear and horror when they find out that the genetically engineered cockroaches want to see blood. Even worse, the beasts turn into hideous killing machines.

Mwa.

I was hesitant about the rating after it slumped, but the film didn't resonate with me, so I gave The Nest the benefit of the doubt. What this film could benefit from is its internally grimy effects. They went all out in that department, but that can hardly hold a candle to the dull content.

It's the characters that doom this film, because for such an enthusiastic, practical approach, the film achieves little in terms of content. The city is completely colorless, and so is much of the approach. It's a shame, however, that so few scenes, outside of the grimy ones, make an impression, as almost all of them are quite dull.

Couldn't do much with it either. The concept, which is little more than some vicious cockroaches wreaking havoc, is merely a framework for pulling bodies apart. There's nothing wrong with that in itself. I'd rather have a straightforward horror film than one that's drawn out. Unfortunately, this film naturally has to incorporate a lot of side issues that only make it harder to digest.

It meanders along and only benefits from a bit of gore. I appreciated that, so the rating isn't too low, but all the fuss surrounding the gory images didn't impress me. It's a shame this film has so much of it, which ultimately leaves a mostly colorless impression, which is a shame, of course.

It starts off quite promisingly, the characters are well introduced, but quite soon as the tension has to build, several characters start behaving strangely and the level of the film drops to the cheaper B segment.

The gore effects are quite good, but that is one of the few plus points that can be mentioned.
