The all-Americanism of the narrative is taken for granted here to indulge in the visual aesthetics that a war in distant lands has to offer, and that approach works wonderfully after all. You will not find original story elements anywhere, plot twists that put the human brain to work, but that does not seem to be the intention from the start. The story is given, and that is further legitimized by the closing piece where the real actors of this true epic have their say, and with that you can unleash your cinematographic talent. In that respect it was sometimes quite tasty. Climbing up a rope ladder and Wagnerian thump to surrender there to the arbitrariness of death, with that concept at hand, this print by Mel Gibson surpasses the long opening scene of Spielberg's landing in Normandy. Once on the battlefield, there is a lot of unpacking, and the only thing that seems to be assured of survival are the countless rats (literally) that gnaw on bodies in decomposition.

Now, what happens on the battlefield isn't completely immune to criticism either; for example, I think that the first act of the battle with the Japanese is above the sequel. The fact that the main character keeps bringing wounded soldiers back from enemy territory is an interesting fact, but there could have been more suspense in it. For example, the sniper is very briefly reviewed. If it's the case that the director just wanted to stick to eyewitness accounts and to keep his own imagination in line from a narrative point of view, that's fine, but a good screenwriter understands what it takes to balance different parts of the film. But, as I pointed out, the criticism dominates in this review purely because if the given criticisms had been handled more carefully, the film might have come quite close to the designation 'masterpiece'.

Not much of a war movie aficionado now, but had this one shot from TV and watched on a weeknight without much expectations. Just wanted to watch a movie. Man, what a good war movie this has turned out to be. Bit of a typical start, being some love drama, then the training with the tough drill sergeant and then the real thing on the battlefield. Movie kept me hooked from the start. Rarely seen such realistic cinema on the battlefield. Bloody, limbs flying around, bullets through the head, torn bodies, etc... Nothing disguised, but it couldn't have been otherwise. Caught myself watching tension with clenched fists. Not much happens to me, so something drew me into the movie... Equals Battlefield Saving Private Ryan. It is therefore recommended, even if you are not a fan of this genre. Especially if you know it's true. The interviews at the end with the real soldiers is even haunting. After film it was quiet. Of course, with current film techniques, everything can be portrayed more realistically than in the past. Even at the end, when I looked up film here, I was shocked that he was only three years old. I agree with everything that has been published in recent years. Must have really missed this one. Probably because I usually don't wait for war movies. But don't blame me for this one...

Geez, how sweet. So sweet and kitschy it's like a parody. It will undoubtedly be a nice story, but this was hard to stand. And that cartoonish figure of a protagonist doesn't make it any better. Nice shot, there's no denying it.
