Hiso Hiso Boshi plot

"A delivery for you."

A spaceship in the shape of a bungalow cruises through the universe. On board is the human robot cum parcel deliverer Yoko. Her job is simple, she delivers packages criss-cross to people who live on dry, dusty planets. Bored of the sheer amount of time she has traveling between all those planets, Yoko begins to wonder what's inside all those packages.

Delicious.

A film that will indeed not find its audience so easily. The arthouse/genre combination is tricky anyway and Sono strikes the balance fairly in the middle. But coincidentally, that's usually the point where films touch me the most.

The Whispering Star is primarily a voyage of discovery, so it is best to know as little as possible about the plot in advance. The pace isn't too fast, so when a number of "surprises" have already been spoiled, things only get tougher.

Visually it's great. Sepia but in a super clean way. The soundtrack is also very present, although in the effects rather than in the music itself. The acting is also decent, although that is not exactly the point on which this film focuses the most.

I think this is one of the best things Sono has ever made. Not very commercial, perhaps (from both an arthouse and Hollywood perspective), but very fascinating and very unique.

4.5* and a extensive review

The type of film that for me completely depends on whether the cinematography is in order.

A fairly static film, but Sono succeeds well in creating an oppressive atmosphere of a future space traveler on a special mission. The scenes on board are repetitive, but by using all kinds of camera angles, boredom never sets in, although you do feel the suffocating emptiness of the main character several times. The black and white scenes are rich in contrast and the universe is beautifully depicted.

Highlights are always the visits to other planets. No less than brilliant visually, Sono immerses you in stunning panoramas. The man walking between stranded boats, the reflection of what is outside in a pool of water indoors and Yoko's bicycle scene in the abandoned city are firm favorites!

Apocalyptic picture full of pressing unanswered existential life questions, which already works for me because of its beauty and its mysterious universe. Not light fare, but if you like Tarr/Tarkovsky definitely give it a try soon.

Sono as I have never seen him before, very impressed! 4.5*

I'm used to something different from Sono. Not that I've seen his entire oeuvre, but overall it was flashier, more violent and above all faster. This film goes against that in every possible way. It is even a real test, because at times it is very repetitive.

Now, that in itself doesn't have to be a problem. You can enjoy the cinematography and camera all the more. It seems like the film is 30-40 years older than 2015. On board the spaceship, which even looks quite cozy inside, a female android. She serves the modern PostNL and delivers parcels between people who live miles apart in the galactic universe. To pass the time, she does housework and cleaning. She is also self-sufficient when she has to replace her Duracell batteries. Well, that looked pretty lame to be honest.

Those excursions on the almost deserted planets and the few encounters with the population do indeed raise existential questions. Not least, she is greeted that it's about time, as if an android is bothered by that.
