Toda [Celeste Holsheimer] lives with her father [Teun Kuilboer] and her grandmother [Anneke Blok] above the family bakery and is having a great time. When war breaks out 'in the south', father is called upon to “protect the others” and grandmother arranges for Toda to travel to her mother [Noortje Herlaar] in a safe neighboring country. However, that journey does not go as expected, leaving Toda on her own to find her way to her mother through dangerous areas. Fortunately, she gets help from a peer [Matsen Montsma], with whom she experiences the necessary adventures. Van Kilsdonk deserves praise for the excellent playing of the children, but she misses opportunities to broach interesting themes in a serious way, making it perhaps a bit too good for the parents who are watching.
