Of course watched to see a young John Candy at work. Around 2009 I saw a large part of the best man's oeuvre. Candy came across to me in almost all of his roles as a man with the heart in the right place. Infectiously sympathetic. Even in the less good films, he seems to have put his heart and soul into it and he often manages to save things. And of course there are films like Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Pure class!

But this Find the Lady... well. Really pure and only worth watching for the reason that I have seen it. Candy is bumbling quite a bit and that produces a smile here and there, but the slapstick is really of extreme proportions, the timing is almost completely lost and the acting is sad. The Bassie and Adriaan-like crooks (but less fun) get way too much screen time and it's actually all such an absurdly large mess that it sometimes becomes laughable, but often also downright tiring.

Nice to have seen, but especially as a 'document' of the beginning of an actor's career. As a film, this actually falls short on all fronts.

2*
