The ambitious Aki works at a design office in Tokyo. She lives with the divorced Tetsuro, who has an eight-year-old son. He runs a family restaurant but dreams of going abroad. They have a modern open relationship in which they accept each other's independence and individualism. However, their harmonious union changes when Tetsuro's son comes to live with them because his mother is in the hospital. The new situation puts a strain on Aki and Tetsuro's relationship.
