Intentionally not very good and that's exactly why it's so nice.

Objectively speaking, there is not much good in it of course. That is why this film can better be viewed with a benevolent eye. The short playing time does help. Looking much longer with benevolence seems difficult after a certain number of minutes of deliberate evil. Now that is just about possible.

The cardboard decors look awful and are magnificent. Delightfully sleazy with lots of colour, lit and decorated. Amateurish and humorous.

The acting is not good. Although Lorinz does a reasonable job in the scenes where he solos. The rest is very over the top. Is that annoying? No, the effect is actually funny.

The sfx are clearly of the plastic and cardboard category. Not bad, because they are so obviously fake and look so grotesque, that the effect is very comical. There are really very strange knickknacks passing by.

The dialogues are nonsensical but therefore very funny. Even objectively, I found them to be of a reasonable standard.

Frankenhooker is delightfully nonsensical and over-the-top entertainment with a clear saturation point.

I felt the magic fade away towards the end of the film. A now-I-know-it feeling arose. Another Henenlotter will therefore have to wait a while.

Delicious Henenlotter. Was never really crazy about his directorial debut - and according to many his best film - Basket Case. But Brain Damage is fantastic and the same goes for Frankenhooker. It is all deliciously wrong, Henenlotter throws all forms of subtlety overboard and makes a colorful, filthy and deliciously stupid carnival. Lead actor James Lorinz - who reminded me a lot of a young Michael Keaton - has the task of carrying almost the entire show on his shoulders, with regular entire sequences in which he is the only player. But he does it very well. The tone is immediately set in the opening scene and then the film reaches climax after climax. The sequence with Jeffrey and a room full of women is nothing short of hilarious and then the title character has yet to appear. After Brain Damage another delicious Henenlotter pulp party and a gem for every schlock fan with a preference for horror comedies.

4 stars.

All in all funny nonsense. A kind of parody of Frankenstein and in that respect quite successful, but you can hardly call the film great. The synopsis on MovieMeter may not be correct, Elizabeth's death is tragic. Funny in one way too, certainly when the tabloid press returns to it during its sensational reports.

Actually not that much worse (or better) than Brain damage or Basket case by the same Henelotter. 2.5* or 3.0*, what does it matter? It is certainly entertaining and the pigment of the prostitutes provides cheap bare breasts. I don't really know how to deal with those explodingchicks. That was so lame, but at the same time so wrongly funny too. The film hardly takes itself seriously - just see what comes of Jeffrey - and maybe you should take the film that way.
