De Gevangenen van Buñuel plot
Film about Las Hurdes, a region in western Spain where there was once an enigmatic poverty. The Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel made a film about this in 1932, Las Hurdes, Tierra Sin Pan (Land Without Bread). The filmmaker depicted the region as a black hell on earth: a land of hunger, disease, dwarves, madmen and early old women. A land forgotten by God. Anno 1999 there is still a curse on the film and the residents are still fighting the black legend that circulates about their area. In 1999, a small film crew once again settled in Las Hurdes with a film screen and a copy of Buñuel's film. The film is shown in the village square and the wonderful stories of the residents and their sometimes very strong reactions to the more than 60-year-old film, in which they may or may not have played a part themselves, form a starting point for a new image of the inhabitants of the region.
