Boi Neon plot

Iremar works at the 'Vaquejadas', a rodeo in northeastern Brazil, where two men on horseback try to take down a bull by grabbing it by the tail. It is dusty and hard work to feed, prepare and care for the bulls. He lives with his colleagues in the truck that transports those bulls to the shows. Together they form a close family. But Brazil and the Northeast are changing and the thriving garment industry is bringing new ambitions to Iremar.

Mwoh, really mwoh. I don't really understand why you would give this four stars. I really can't get any further than mediocrity. Shots are really endless, especially in the beginning. This destroys the narrative, but it was not the aim of the makers to tell a story. We spend a few days in the lives of a few cowboys. It actually doesn't interest me much. Cinematographically there are some pretty images. But there are few dialogues, and in general not much happens. A bit of rodeo riding, a bit of powdering bull tails.

Well, I don't understand why you spend so much time and money on making a rather boring film because you want to show that life is boring. So that the viewer thinks, gosh, how boring it is when you're a cowboy in Brazil. Then you could have made a short film of 20 minutes. Then it would have been just about bearable. I think life can also be so boring that one of the cowboys commits suicide or something and then you see how much sorrow the others have. I'm just saying, gosh, if you want to show how excruciatingly boring it is, then make it really, really excruciatingly boring, I would say.

Now the film remains somewhat superficial in my opinion, we certainly see hints of deeper trauma but nowhere do we crawl into the head of a character or do we really see the hopelessness of this situation erupt. Is this realistic?? Well it will certainly have happened and as far as I am concerned you should always come up with something with a film. A problem or a struggle, something that grates in a film. I miss that a bit in this film, it is there somewhere but is simply not worked out enough.

So what remains is a mediocre film that is nice to see a different culture that you don't see often.

I'm also not exactly crazy about the film about Brazilian cowboys who enjoy pulling bulls' tails. I missed a clear line in the film, but I didn't get much further than the hopelessness of the impoverished existence of these farmers. Not much happened.

Fortunately, it was visually worth watching the film. The bulls and the action, for example, are very well captured, but the absolute highlight was indeed saved for the end with the passionate lovemaking with the pregnant lady. Very stylish and excellent handling of camera and lighting.

Also remarkable is that Mascaro regularly brought up gender identity in the film. Striking at times and certainly not wrong.

Iremar [Juliano Cazarré] and Galega [Maeve Jinkings] earn their living in different ways at a Brazilian rodeo where they raise their daughter Cacá [Alyne Santana]. Iremar has other ambitions, but you won't notice much of that in this almost plotless drama that relies mainly on its authentic atmosphere. Not a film for people hoping for a story, but for those who like it there is an (unnecessarily) long sex scene with a pregnant woman. This actually won a truckload of festival awards!
