Impressive camera work indeed, beautiful images and interesting shots. Also quite a few dynamic action scenes, perhaps not surprising given the war setting, but still very beautifully executed. But I still found it quite boring, partly because the plot was quite unclear to me. Yes, something about the struggle between the Whites and the communists in Ukraine, at the time of the Russian Revolution, and also something about workers at the Arsenal factory in Kiev, but I couldn't make much more chocolate with it. And to be honest, that did get in the way of my movie enjoyment a bit.

Dovzhenko uses an interesting style....okay, okay, styles. Quite a mixture of things.

At first you think you are looking at an ancestor of Tarkovsky, full of stationary, terrifying (ghost) figures. Then you imagine yourself in the First World War where many shots resemble political cartoons [Tardi even came to mind in my associative brain]. Then pure Soviet cinema [fast editing, shadows, etc.] that we know from Eisenstein, among others. Then an excruciatingly boring 'meeting' that does not benefit the film. Fortunately, you will be woken up by simply mixing all the above styles together with even more eccentric heads and characters. And then that exciting music that keeps pounding away! Relentless and defeated, 'end' suddenly appears in the image.

Special war of attrition!

A film about the battle during probably the February Revolution in Kiev, then of course part of the Russian Empire. In the beginning we saw “Niki”, the last Tsar of Russia, writing a letter. The First World War rages on. Beautiful images of the Great War and subsequently the uprisings. Not much later, in 1918, Ukraine became an independent country with still very strong Russian influences, which quickly became apparent a few years later under Stalin.

Static camera use, but with flashy editing. Obviously set up as propaganda. Very heroic and the sound with all those bombastic songs only reinforces that. Russian history is complex, a little background is not superfluous here. Nevertheless, a fascinating viewing experience.
