Great film this Les Miserables from a director that I try to discover new things little by little. I met Bille August in September during the very first screening of his new film 55 Steps with Helena Bonham Carter and Hilary Swank at the Ostend film festival. He was also there to give a word of explanation together with Johan Heldenbergh. As far as I'm concerned, this is his second best film I've seen so far. I found Night Train To Lisbon and House of the Spirits just that little bit less interesting. I also thought this was a fantastic book in which I learned French in a nice way. Since it's been 10 years since I read the book, it was time for a refresh of this classic. I still haven't watched the musical version from 2012, but I will sometimes. Not immediately because I now know the story again.

Neeson plays Jean Valjean in a beautiful way and Javert is also played sublimely by Geoffrey Rush. Two great actors, really. I didn't know Claire Danes that directly, to be honest, beautiful appearance and plays very natural. Thurman's role is quite short but gripping. So you hear it from a very good cast in a beautiful film adaptation of an unparalleled book by Victor Hugo. Enjoyed 2 hours of fun.

The best non-French version of the film. Despite the Hollywood credits, the film didn't feel too Hollywood. I particularly liked the decoration: the impoverished and impoverished France of the 1830s is appropriately depicted. I really enjoyed this. Victor Hugo's epic is a very humanistic work, and the director also handles this properly. "Once a thief, always a thief" runs the simple logic of the overzealous policeman Javert, the personification of the law itself, which cannot be broken. The law is not compatible with moral dilemmas. However, Valjean, once indeed a petty thief, has become a good and just man. He proves that a man has the power to improve himself... . The ideas of Les Misérables can still be found in our legal system. The film is only marred by a slightly too concise story. The confrontations between Valjean and Javert are not exactly grandiose or memorable and the romance between Cosette and Marius left me too indifferent. Would love to see the version with Jean Gabin. Another one to put on my list.
