Adua e le Compagne plot
Due to a change in law, the brothels of Rome have to close. Four girls from such a brothel decide to pool their hard-earned money and open a trattoria outside the city. They ask for help from a strange but powerful ex-customer of theirs. They start the business and when it slowly becomes a success, it seems that they have been given another chance at happiness. But the shadow of the past won't let them go.

Hard-hitting social drama about four prostitutes, who —initially out of necessity— choose a different life, but ultimately are hopeless because of their past. In addition to the dramatic story, the film, with an unforgettable ending, is completely carried by the excellent acting, in particular by Simone Signoret and Emmanuelle Riva. The most striking appearance is Sandra Milo, more or less a cross between Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida.
