The book was quite a hit at the time, and I also really loved the movie.

In the meantime, I threw the book away during the umpteenth clean-out of my bookcase room, under the motto 'if I haven't touched it in the past twenty-five years, I probably won't touch it in the next twenty-five either'. But the film did remain, and perhaps that wasn't the right choice.

In retrospect, it's hard to find what I saw in it at the time. The story is much too whiny, too forcedly romantic - and perhaps it plays a role in the fact that I have learned to avoid these kinds of 'relationships'. Romance is nice, but it shouldn't become too much Die Leiden des jungen Werthers.

But it hardly works for me as a film either. The attraction between Scacchi and D'Onofrio doesn't come across - while they were a couple at the time. Well, not for much longer, but they still could have made the effort. And perhaps even worse, for a film about eroticism, skin hunger and lust, there is very, very little nudity to be seen. As Fransman so subtly explains, we don't even get to see a bare breast of Greta, and that feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. And in line with that, the film ends in a rumination, and only then do we get to see something of what Scacchi and D'Onofrio can actually do as actors - and only then that Greta is wearing her usual silk underwear. But by then the tone has already been set, and the film has long since proven to be a failure.
