Director Roland Emmerich appears to have used a Steven Spielberg layout for his international debut, but the end result looks messy and unfinished. The choice of music, the mainly use of childish leading roles and the "friendly" horror elements reveal that Joey was not made for an old audience, but even as a nostalgia film it hardly has any effect. The children act very statically and their dialogues seem to be completely dubbed, so you are never emotionally involved in the action. The practical effects are nevertheless charming and even with a small budget Emmerich knows better than anyone how to magnify the scale, but Joey is a largely failing children's film. You have to be a big fan to enjoy this, but it's easy to admit that there are worse versions of its kind.
