964 Pinocchio plot

A 'love robot' is fired from his position because he can no longer exercise it. But instead of being destroyed to keep the technology in the robot a secret, it can escape. Opinions are quite divided between people who really think this is fantastic, and people who can do very little with it. In the first half of the film I clearly fall into the latter camp, but the second half of the film did make up for quite a bit. I thought Tetsuo and Electric Dragon 80000 V were both quite cool, and perhaps the expectation that this film would go in the same direction was a bad start. But although it is a very vague film, it is also quite boring in the first three quarters or so. And certainly in the beginning it is badly filmed: very shaky images that are not nearly as alienating as they are probably intended, ugly colors. And on top of that annoying characters, a plot that seems to go nowhere, and with Pinocchio who moans, runs, waves and screams like a tormented mongoloid. The tramp is not much better, and the vomiting and other filthiness did not really help either. The first 45 minutes were a bit of a struggle to get through - but then it slowly started to entertain and I got more into the movie. Still, even then it was mostly a fight between a sense of amusement and irritation.

What a film. The first half hour is relatively quiet, but at a certain point all hell breaks loose and you have to watch with your mouth open until the end. An assault on your senses that, as far as I'm concerned, even Tetsuo could learn a thing or two from. A sort of cinematic equivalent of noise music. Too bad about the amateurish smells here and there and the somewhat tamer first half, because otherwise I would have been able to give it 5*. Wonderful rollercoaster ride.

At times a creative film in which director Shozin Fukui tries to compensate for the extremely cheap production in all sorts of shapes and sizes. 964 Pinocchio therefore has intense camera movements and lightning-fast editing, which regularly conceal the fact that the film looks quite ugly. The acting is also substandard, although the direction can be partly blamed for that. Fukui instructs his cast members to groan, moan and/or scream throughout the entire film, so they didn't have much work to do here. Furthermore, I'm a little surprised that people label this film as an intense climb, because it's not such an impossible ride and the explicit focus on filth and perverse acts only emphasize that. It regularly comes up with innovative angles and the high tempo provides the much-needed entertainment, but otherwise it's also a visual mess that mainly relies on a number of unique scenes.
