Robert Montgomery is one of the few actors who was allowed to direct himself more than once during the studio system. A year after his experimental but well-received The Lady In The Lake (the first film shot entirely from the perspective of the main character), he directed himself again in this story about Gagin [Montgomery], a WWII veteran who travels to a village on the Mexican border to settle a score with gangster Frank Hugo [Fred Clark].

There’s a shady FBI agent [Art Smith], the lively Pancho [Thomas Gomez], a deceitful lady [Rita Conde] and the seemingly naive young woman [Wanda Hendrix] who follows Gagin everywhere. All the ingredients for a classic film noir are there, but the first half is a lot of talk and little action. It’s not until halfway through that the story really gets going and the hands of screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer are visible in the sharp dialogues. But your patience is put to the test here.
