A good and very solid Ozu, this time again in color, about an important turning point in the history of a Japanese family, consisting of a widower and his four children.

The calm and quiet narrative style, supported by the low camerawork, always has something very soothing. I have experienced that with several Ozu's and with this End of Summer that feeling also reappears after a while. The story is quite interesting to follow and the various characters are faced with important choices and all struggle with feelings. Some changes in life are simply inevitable, a theme that is also addressed here. The acting is, as always, fine and Ozu's muse Setsuko Hara plays very nicely again with her characteristic sympathetic appearance.

End of Summer is not as good as Ozu's best work. He occasionally drops a few stitches and it is slightly less strong in terms of emotional impact than comparable films of his. Nevertheless, it is a nice watch and even a slightly lesser Ozu remains above average. Family dramas have always been entrusted to him.

The third film of Ozu that I have seen and also his best. Beautiful story, excellent acting especially that of the widower and a great last half hour full of symbolism. The Zen philosophy was very clearly readable. Another plus is that this film is shot in color. The black and white films of Ozu looked rather boring. That cannot be said of this otherwise very optimistic film, which gave me a good feeling.

In my opinion, Yasujirō Ozu made beautiful, sometimes even magnificent films in the years after the war until the early 1960s. However, I would like to make a side note about that. Both in terms of content and design, these films are very similar, at least the six that I have seen of his so far. Not for the first time, when watching this beautiful, human drama, I occasionally had the feeling that I was watching some kind of revision. Not rightly of course, but still. I would not have found a bit more variation, both in terms of content and style, a bad thing.
