Remains beautiful.

Throw this together with Omohide Poro Poro and Shinkokyu no Hitsuyo (and maybe also Megane, for some sea fun) in a playlist and you can go on holiday for a day. Those quiet rural non-dramas often do well for me.

Hunan is a perfect backdrop, a beautiful region where time has apparently stood still. Visually also very skilfully depicted, making the trip of father and son worthwhile in any case. Add to that the serene ambient soundtrack and you already have a mini vacation.

The lack of real drama (at least the negative variety) is the last element that lifts this film far above the crowd. Despite the many opportunities for arguments and tensions, Huo does not give in to temptation.

Fine director, this remains his best film. He also made beautiful films, unfortunately he has faded into obscurity. Unjustified as far as I'm concerned. This is still a beautiful film.

4.5* and a extensive review

This story about the growing understanding between a father and a son is proof that you don't need all kinds of bells and whistles or spectacle to make a great film. The charm lies mainly in the simplicity and sincerity of the film, although the cinematography and the picturesque surroundings contribute in no small part to the beautiful end result. Because of those locations I couldn't help but think of Xiao Cai Feng [aka The Little Chinese Seamstress] (2002), also shot in Hunan and also a very enjoyable movie.

This is simply a beautiful gem, a slow, wonderful film that still manages to move. Beautiful nature that is fantastically depicted. During their joint difficult journey as a postman, a father and son get to know and appreciate each other better and the son also realizes that being a postman in this remote area is more than just delivering letters and parcels, but that he also had a social function. I still remember the time when the postmen could have a chat with lonely people everywhere and have a drop of drink. For these people this was the only thing to look forward to! Now everything is calculated down to the minute and they barely have time to say anything, a sad development. Two good actors, beautiful nature, a simple but beautiful story, that's all it takes to make a good film... I really enjoy these types of films, especially in these horrible times...
