The Assassination of Trotsky plot

Mexico City, 1940. After being exiled by Stalin, Leon Trotsky (Richard Burton) lives with his wife in a high-security villa in Mexico. He is still involved in politics and his old enemies don't like it at all. Hit man Jackson (Alain Delon) is sent after Trotsky. Jackson seduces one of Trotsky's sympathizers, the lovely idealist Gita Samuels (Romy Schneider), and manages to penetrate Trotsky's circle of confidants. Jackson is about to complete his assignment, but then things take an unexpected turn...

Movie is entertaining for a boring Monday night. This is of course not a classic. Didn't expect much from it either and that's why the DVD had been lying in the dust for over half a year. But this one isn't really bad, but it's not good either.

2.5*

Despite a decent cast of famous actors, it's actually a pretty bad movie. Perhaps mainly because the script focuses too much on a few facts, but seems to ignore others - such as the background of the killer. The how, why, and outcome of the first attack are dealt with just as loosely. What we do get is a killer with a whole series of weird features, and a lot of silent scenes that come across as a bit over-stylized - well that was a bit in fashion at the time, but it really irritates here.

We don't really hear anything new from Trotsky or his killer. Alain Delon does not convince, Romy Schneider does not really come out - and is perhaps mainly cast to face Delon. I don't like Richard Burton either, and the goatee doesn't suit his head. In the continuity it is equally sad, with bullfighting as the highlight - halfway through suddenly another bull and another matador. Sloppy.
