The remake, which I think is also better known, I saw years ago and it is nice. I came across this original by accident and since I don't remember the remake well and think the story sounds interesting on paper, I decided to give the original a chance.

The advantage here is the Norwegian setting, which naturally already has something raw about it, which automatically gives Insomnia a somewhat darker edge. In short, an interesting story with a fine setting, but that does not automatically make a good film. Stellan Skarsgård isn't bad in itself, but I thought the supporting roles were all mediocre and didn't come out well. Furthermore, the simple sober approach of the director makes it sometimes a bit boring. Visually it's nice, but not good enough to keep it interesting once the story itself sinks in.

The latter ensures that it all feels quite long. The combination of factors is just too weak to see anything really fascinating here. Usually I prefer the original in these kinds of movies, but here the remake will undoubtedly win.

Thin. The film has a strong start, a number of police officers start an investigation into a murder of a girl, but it eventually goes in a direction that didn't convince me and didn't really appeal to me. The murder suddenly becomes an afterthought, and the police officer spontaneously goes the wrong way in a rather implausible way. He almost becomes buddies with the killer, and the officer investigating his partner's death suddenly starts covering for him as well. Completely strange if this is a complete stranger Swede who comes to Norway for a while, everyone is happy to lend him a hand with the cover up of the manslaughter on his partner...

The role of the insomnia didn't convince me either. Okay, he sleeps badly, well what??? I add myself to the group that suffered from heavy eyelids while watching, the film is quite sleep-inducing at times. I also found the elaboration a bit messy, and there was also a lack of good connection between the scenes. A wealthy writer who donates expensive clothes but walks around like a bum himself, the simple story of the seasoned police officer about the death of his partner, which everyone already feels that this story does not hold up at all, etc. Something all too vague and too hazy.

Very skinny. 2*

For a change, significantly less than the remake. Where the latter harbors a constant glow of tension, the original regularly breaks down, making it difficult to keep your head up.
