Strange film that is hard to grasp. A young New Yorker is kidnapped and later wakes up in the harem of a princely Arabian palace. To her surprise, her kidnapper is a man who acted out of loneliness and romantic desire. His cultural level and sensitive nature touch her and it builds up to a more intimate relationship. Although there is certainly a cultural gap, it is mainly the loneliness within social positions that is highlighted. It is somewhere there that both characters find a connection with each other. Selim is a prince of high descent who has to live according to predetermined rules that have been passed down for generations. Diane is a woman who is lonely because of the individualistic modern society. The title Harem is therefore somewhat misleading because you could think that the film describes life in a harem, but that is not the case...

The visual flair is there: it is beautifully shot and manages to create an exotic atmosphere, but the story lacks a lot of logic and therefore often comes across as incomprehensible and vague. Why the prince has his eye on her is for example very far-fetched. I expect that a lot of people will raise their eyebrows at this film. Dull role of Ben Kingsley. He can do better. Was nominated five times for the Cesars at the time.
