Fairly good silent film with a somewhat disappointing happy ending that does not fit the atmosphere of the story at all. Apparently this ending was done to avoid censorship and not to scare off movie audiences.

The film only really 'explodes' after 20 minutes. Although the first 20 minutes do demonstrate editing genius. Then the film only becomes really interesting when the story really begins. This is accompanied by nice technical features, including water dripping over the camera lens. Very nice. But the woman's infidelity and her impulsive act to leave with her new lover whom she has known for a few minutes. At one point - after the fight, and the dumping of the body - every viewer knows what's going on. And in the bargain, the ending is very annoying. But Dragon already indicated why that was, I agree.

Nice to see, beautiful film technique, but it would have been more effective as a short film excluding that stupid ending. Three stars are enough (and long live ARTE).

Charles Vanel's only feature film and apparently the last French silent film.

Two moods in this film, namely one of celebration, love and joie de vivre and afterwards one of unhappiness and sad misery.

Certainly not bad, but the idiotic ending, which may leave more than one viewer feeling duped, does not help a more favorable assessment.
