The Big Steal plot

"Mitchum is HOT! - HOT...off location in the heart of Mexico...HOT...after a girl with a million-dollar figure!...HOT...at the nation's boxoffices...HOT...in his newest picture!"

US Army Lieutenant Duke Holliday is on his way to Vera Cruz, Mexico by boat. En route, Duke is confronted in his cabin by Army Captain Vincent Blake, who plans to arrest him for an alleged theft of $300,000 from the Army. After a fight, Duke takes Blake's identification papers and he then leaves the boat in the harbor of Vera Cruz. There Duke, now impersonating Captain Blake, accidentally meets brunette Joan Graham, who is looking for her corrupt ex-fiancé Jim Fiske because she wants back the $2,000 loaned to him. Fiske manages to escape Joan and Duke and he flees by car across Mexico. Joan, who at first dislikes Duke, pursues Fiske with him, but both are again hot on the heels of Blake. Meanwhile, Mexican police inspector General Ortega also gets wind of the case and wants to know more about the money thefts and follows Fiske, Blake, Joan and Duke.

Why are we comparing In a Lonely Place to The Big Steal?

And why is this actually called a film noir? I saw it as part of a noir box, but as you can read in the messages above, this genre is not really correct. Or it must be the most light-hearted and especially sunny film noir ever. It is more of a comedy with a fairly innocent crime plot. It is not a drama either. Unfortunately, IMDB does not help to perform a genre correction.

Anyway, I liked the film, despite it not being a noir. The fast pace, the lightness of the whole, the sunshine, the colorful characters: everything created a nice atmosphere. Mitchum clearly enjoys his role and Greer is a very pleasant surprise. She steals the show here as far as I'm concerned and it's always nice to see such a rare woman in the 40s who doesn't lapse into melodrama somewhere in the film, but always remains quite powerful. I didn't think Bendix was anything special. A pretty normal role if you ask me. The Mexican police did a nice job and unlike Dogie_Hogan I don't see any American superiority. It seemed pretty clear to me that the Mexicans quickly realized that something was wrong and they were clearly trying to lure Bendix into a trap by playing him off against Mitchum. In addition, the scene with the Mexican road workers was very nice.

My DVD was a color version by the way. I have to agree with Querelle that the coloring here is done quite inconspicuously, although I decided to change my screen to black and white after 5 minutes. It wasn't the best picture quality (Murder My Sweet from the same box was transferred much better), but it wasn't unwatchable or anything.

A 4 small stars for this nice movie.

This was certainly not a Noir, and actually not a drama at all. The Big Steal is a nice, light road movie. Many outdoor shots, little tension, but in itself it was all quite funny. There is a nice pace in the film and fortunately it does not last long. I have to say that I expected a very, very different film. Robert Mitchum was of course very strong and also Jane Greer. Here and there a few funny moments, such as the Mexican pit scene. Furthermore it was also quite nice to look at, but certainly nothing more.

2.5 stars

Film critic Leslie Halliwell: "Routine Hollywood at a level of seldom achieved, and short enough to leave one asking for more." And so it is. On the second viewing my expectations were a bit too high and the film was a bit disappointing, but it is certainly entertaining, and I didn't see the twist at the end with the villain role of William Bendix coming. A nice, relaxed film, although the director must have thought differently about that during filming with all the problems Dogie_Hogan mentions above (when he saw how thin Mitchum was and how "fat" Greer, he thought: "They've exchanged stomachs!").
