A popular play with a somewhat anti-Semitic undertone concerns Mathias [Lionel Barrymore], a friendly, esteemed innkeeper who, due to his generosity, gets into financial problems. He can save his business if he marries off his [Lola Todd] daughter, but he stubbornly refuses. When a wealthy Polish-Jewish traveling salesman [E. Alyn Warren] visits his inn, the distraught Mathias sees an opportunity to solve his problems: he kills his guest in a remote place, steals his gold and announces that he has stolen an uncle's inheritance. Soon his conscience starts to gnaw at him, especially when the police hire a hypnotist [Boris Karloff] who can force people to tell the truth.

Barrymore is excellent in this pedantic melodrama that has a pretty dubious ending. Hypnotist Karloff seems like Caligari's (literally) big brother, including glasses, hat and black cloak, and Young keeps the momentum going.
