No messages yet for a very special film.

I have to say that this film did not overwhelm me. I do have to say that this film is very captivating and in terms of pace still quite nice to watch.

But I have seen better from Vittorio De Sicca. I thought he could have portrayed/worked better in certain aspects. The drama is gripping but not gripping enough, which could have been the case with this film. Still, this is a beautiful film in which the two brilliant actors shine again. 3.5.

Vittorio de Sica + Sophia Loren + Marcello Mastroianni: it can hardly go wrong. And it doesn't in this gripping drama about a lost love in the aftermath of World War II. The film contains a number of oppressive, confrontational scenes, such as the reunion at the station in the Soviet Union and the farewell at the station in Italy when Antonio returns to his second wife. In these and other scenes, Sophia Loren shows herself to be an extraordinary actress. Throughout the film, she balances between emotional extremes in a fabulous way. Her best role ever? I won't comment on that. Sophia Loren has played so many wonderful roles in both comedies and dramas in her rich career that with the best will in the world I can't choose. But this performance is certainly one of the candidates for the election of her best role ever.
Marcello Mastroianni is also in good form. The chemistry between him and Loren feels like identical twins. Add to that the beautiful soundtrack by Henry Mancini and you have a film that sticks. Beautiful.

The film veers from comedy to war to melancholic romance, without really excelling in any of those aspects.

Fortunately, there are the two main actors who are always fun to watch. The rather bloated Mancini score is also beautiful, but you really have to like European films from that period to really appreciate it all.
