Sud Pralad plot

"Love is a malady without a cure..."

There is magic in the air. Times are happy and love is easy for young soldier Keng and country boy Tong. Pleasant evenings with Tong's family, nights full of song in the city... Until this life is suddenly turned upside down by a disappearance. And some wild beast butchers cows. Local legends claim that somehow man can be transformed into another creature... And then begins the story of a soldier who goes alone deep into the jungle, where myth often turns out to be reality...

I really liked Sud Sanaeha, which is why I was looking forward to seeing a Weerasethakul film again. Tropical Malady is similar on the one hand, but very different on the other. It is clearly a film with two faces.

The first part is beautifully filmed and quite romantic, with a love between two men, which takes shape as time passes. Not much happens story-wise, but the atmosphere is nice and relaxed and light-hearted. Not exactly annoying to look at.

The second part is completely different. What immediately struck me was that they are the same men, but the tone and time setting is very different. The relaxed atmosphere has disappeared and is exchanged for a little bit of tension. The pace is again slow, but I was quite curious to see what the soldier was after. The constant background sounds of the Thai jungle are also very nice here, which contribute to the mysterious atmosphere.

Afterwards you wonder what you were watching. Apart from the actors, I couldn't discover much coherence between the stories, although that is not that important. However, I have to say that it was nice to watch, wonderfully relaxing and I was not bored for a second.

3.5*

I found the first half of Sud Pralad quite tough: it is messily told, not very exciting in its drama, but it does have a kind of unpolished beauty in the cinematography. The part in the jungle, on the other hand, encapsulated me, albeit slowly, and by the time the denouement occurred I was staring at the image as if enchanted. Great sound too. The mythical part of the story is not that interesting as far as I am concerned, but the images have an enchanting power. Special.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is as inscrutable in his films as his name. Somehow I keep giving his films a chance, but I have never once gotten above 3.0* and even that is rather an exception.

Once again a difficult film from him to grasp. Maybe I just don't know enough about Thai cultural and religious symbolism to understand the film. Spirituality and mysticism are central again. Although we will have to wait for the second part to discover that. It makes the first part especially long-winded and partly redundant. Not that you are rewarded in the second part, but the bizarre events surrounding a tiger and some spiritual souls create a certain atmosphere. The auditory enhances that a bit with those fascinating jungle sounds.
