Was the monster between the ears? I have to say that in the long run I was no longer paying attention. From the moment the harmonica of Onze Upan A Time In The West appeared, I more or less gave up. It wasn't really a special film either, although I had to laugh at the thought of how entire tribes give up on hearing the first (English) dialogues of the German soldiers. Does no one read in advance which actors are playing? However, it is clearly stated on the poster.

I must say that the atmosphere of The Bunker was very appealing. The start was good enough with nice images and an interesting setting. Especially when it turned out that the 'cause' of the event lay in an ancient history about plague victims buried alive, I hoped for a nice curse story. It just doesn't show up anywhere. The last room of the bunker looked cool, but you can't survive on a great atmosphere and beautiful images. Nothing spectacular happens and in terms of events it looks very cheap and small-scale. Too bad, because in my opinion this film did have potential and it could have been a second The Keep.

I have never been able to understand speaking English in films that are not from the English speaking countries. Sometimes it is really disturbing, as in this film the gentlemen all speak English but not a word of German.

Would they understand what was written on the plates? "Gefahr"

Despite this handicap in the film, I also thought it was a nice whole in a somewhat nasty environment for young men who play war with other young people from abroad. The nasty environment is of course the setting for the horror and the story surrounding this was liked.

I can't say that the acting was bad either, too bad the film is a bit slow and there isn't much action. Still, it wasn't that it was annoying to watch, you just ripple along a bit.

Overall: 6.5

Taken on the gamble at a MusicStore about 15 years ago, I think. A gamble that didn't work out well, because I thought it was a mediocre and disappointing film at the time. Now, however, with adjusted expectations, I look at the film differently and even dare to use the word undervalued.

A claustrophobic atmosphere is created just like in the comparable Below. Only no submarine here, but the oppressive environment of a bunker with a sinister atmosphere around it. It should also be clear that there is no real horror or horror. The Bunker mainly revolves around a group of exhausted soldiers who are weighed down by war neurosis and the feeling of guilt about things or crimes committed themselves. Is there really something or do they just see them flying through exhausted nerves is the question? It is played with in a fine way, and the viewer is kept just as ignorant and searching as the men themselves. The alternative title with its 'the evil is within' can be interpreted in two ways, and as far as I'm concerned it refers to what the men themselves personify.

Is there nothing to notice...? Sure! Still, I don't mind the English-speaking Germans so much. I personally think less than the burnt Schenke whose uniform looks reasonably undamaged, and the fact that his pistol is twice with an open drawer is a sign that the weapon must be reloaded. Nevertheless, a few seconds later he fires away again. I also find the story of the old Mirus just a bit too gruesome to be credible and tangible.

Nevertheless, The Bunker appeals to me a lot better than before. The atmosphere is fine, just like the group of B-actors who do a great job and, as said, the well-shadowed facts of it all. Of course it's not all that great, but in a certain perspective it's more than reasonable.
