Greenwich Village, 1953. Larry Lapinski thinks it's time to leave home and move to Greenwich Village, a trendy neighborhood in New York. Larry dreams of becoming a star actor and fills his days with auditions and to make ends meet at lunchtime making smoothies for customers in a grocery store. He lives a quiet life with his girlfriend Sarah and enjoys his independence. However, their relationship has quite a few ups and downs. Larry tries to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend Sarah and regularly stays in local coffee shops with some friends.

Semi-autobiographical comedy drama set in 1953. Larry Lapinski [Lenny Baker] decides to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. To do so, he exchanges his childhood home, and especially his domineering mother [Shelley Winters], for Greenwich Village, a haven for freethinkers and eccentrics where Larry seems to find his niche when he meets Sarah [Ellen Greene].
Director/screenwriter Paul Mazursky himself worked in Lee Strasberg's The Actors Studio in 1953 and made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick's Fear and Desire that same year. It is clear that he knows the world he creates here well, as evidenced by the many colorful characters and the lively location work. The attention to detail sometimes distracts from the plot and Lenny Baker proves no match for Shelley Winters, who beautifully steals the film, especially when she dances at a party.

I found the main character sometimes a bit too colorful (an ode to Chaplin I think, but that could have been a bit less for me), but still this is an interesting film by Mazursky. Very nice to see Walken (then still Chris) and Goldblum as youngsters and Winters indeed steals the show. Furthermore a wonderful portrait of the Village, where I sometimes had to think of 'Inside Llewyn Davis' but then quite different.
