Strangely low average.

The film occasionally lacks a bit of pace and some extra verve, but otherwise a very nice French freaker.

Not a real horror like the French have been making for the last 5 years. Rather a slightly twisted strange video. I thought there was quite a freaky atmosphere there. Well acted, especially that old couple and the vague children.

Furthermore, a few nice, twisted scenes that are not so much shocking, goofy or scary, just quite strange. So you can't really expect a straight forward horror film.

Nicely shot, well acted, some cool scenes. It's not quite enough to be really good, but it's still a fun and surprising snack. The score is below average, but that is often the case with the slightly vaguer French horror.

3.5*

Director Laurent Tuel has a good sense of how to build atmosphere. Children's Play contains several strikingly bleak images, especially for a film that is rated 12+ on MovieMeter. It is mainly the unreal characters and the generally substandard acting that throw a spanner in the works for Tuel. Karin Viard in particular has apparently lost track of how normal people interact with each other and the somewhat charisma-less children hardly help. In addition, Tuel simply does not do much with these kids, which means that the threat is barely able to cooperate from that perspective. All in all, the approach to the plot is quite nice, although the unreal aspect of it also detracts greatly from the eventual build-up of tension. What remains is a horror film that looks authentic, has quite an atmosphere and has a well-thought-out story, but does not make an above-average impression in any respect. Perhaps Viard could simply have stuck exclusively to theater acting.

Watched this today on Netflix, it's nothing special, not even good enough on a bad Sunday with a flu...
