I had to yawn towards the end of the film, and no, it wasn't from fatigue at that point. Jess Franco must have been a truly idiosyncratic filmmaker. This is now the eighth or ninth of his films I've seen. Not only does the quality of his films vary widely, but it also always seems like he's just doing his thing without paying any attention to anyone.
I have to agree with my predecessor and admit that this isn't the most interesting film to watch. Why is that? First of all, the acting isn't great, but the characters also don't seem fully developed. There's little depth to the characters, so as a viewer, you don't empathize with the victims, nor with the woman seeking revenge.
Furthermore, the soundtrack choice is a bit unusual. It consists mainly of Big Band Jazz, supplemented here and there with an organ. It doesn't create any tension, but it also doesn't create an erotic atmosphere. As a result, the erotic scenes are presented in a rather uninteresting way. Even the bit of necrophilia that Franco shows comes across as a bit apathetic. It's completely unclear to me what he intended to convey with the images. He certainly doesn't succeed in shocking the audience at all.
So what else am I giving points for? Primarily for the camerawork. It looks quite good, and there are some interesting, experimental shots here and there. The scene with the sherry glass is the most striking. You can only clearly see the actress looking for the camera when she puts the glass down. That could have been a bit more subtle, but as mentioned before, the acting wasn't particularly high-quality.
Another mediocre Franco title. Maybe I should just stop watching his films.

The second Franco film I've seen, and this one was also enjoyable, but as Richard Voorhees so aptly put it: apathetic. It's not exciting, not erotic, but still enjoyable to watch, perhaps precisely for those reasons: the film drifts past me dreamily, like the lapping waves that fill the soundtrack. Solidad Miranda is fantastic. She's exactly what the film needs: presence and the charisma that make you simply enjoy watching her, even though she doesn't do much. I really enjoy these kinds of films from time to time. With the emphasis on "from time to time."

Quite expensive to buy for what the film ultimately is. Well, I did want to own it given Soledad Miranda's memorable performance and my curiosity about Horst Tappert's role, aka Derrick. The latter isn't much, as Horst doesn't have much screen time in this film. Soledad, on the other hand, plays her role very convincingly and thus lives up to expectations. She plays a widow who takes revenge on four professors/doctors from a scientific committee who have driven her husband mad enough to commit suicide. Lots of nudity, few gory moments. Story-wise, it's not much; it's just a simple revenge film driven by sex and music. There are a few nice shots, and the labyrinth house on the mountain is a fantastic location. Suspense is completely lacking. Another plus is Ewa Strömberg as the sexy Dr. Crawford, who has a lesbian scene with Soledad. How tragic can life be, because the ending of this film actually happened in real life. Soledad Miranda subsequently died in a car accident, making her even more legendary as the mysterious, sexy actress with striking facial expressions who still had a lot to offer. 5/10
