1918. Italy goes to great lengths to avert the Austrian invasion. At President Wilson's request, American doctors and nurses from the Red Cross are sent to Italy to raise the soldiers' morale and care for the wounded. One of them is Ernest Hemmingway. He goes to Europe as aid, but wants to fight at the front at all costs because that way he will be able to write about his experiences later. That desire costs him dearly, because just minutes after his arrival, the trenches are bombed and many of his new comrades are killed. He is taken to a field hospital and from there transported to a hospital. In this way he gets to know the nurse Agnes, who just like him left America to take care of the wounded...
