Reasonable film about a public prosecutor and the murder of a Puerto Rican boy by an Italian youth gang. And this case has both a political and personal impact on the main character. Good camera work and good acting, but at the time the social aspect of the film must have made more of an impact than it does now.

America's favorite movie theme (especially in those years): one man's generous struggle for justice against public opinion, corruption and political interference.

Frankenheimer made it a good film that reaches a high level at certain moments, but our John dares to mix a lot of exaggeration into everything and anything, which often leads to over-dramatization (the opening scene for example).

The filmmaker certainly has a point and definitely touches the harsh reality with the sketch of the rival gangs of various origins in the big city in the States. Is it about Italians and Puerto Ricans, many films still talk about Irish people and of course white and black...

Burt Lancaster is handsome and will once again underline his talent and good collaboration with John Frankenheimer in "Birdman of Alcatraz" a year later.

Shelley Winters, with an all too obvious wig, is less convincing, while Dina Merrill does put on a good act.

Film is essentially about social peer pressure and the excesses it can lead to. Although the theme is still current, in terms of design, this film has passed its best-before date in my opinion. Why the victim's sister was forced to confess by the prosecutor during the trial that she was a prostitute is beyond me. That fact plays no role in the handling of the case. I think it's pure sensationalism.
The film has its strong moments. In general, however, the content and the acting have not made much of an impression on me.
