Not nearly as bad

Although I do have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand it has very fine parts with enough atmosphere and gore, but it also has a number of intrusive aspects that I don't appreciate in this kind of work.

The good thing about man-thing is in the setting, the swamp offers the opportunity to work on the atmosphere. Now this happens quite moderately, but it still manages to be enough and certainly knows how to entertain it. The thick fog banks and the green glow over the scenes in the middle of the swamp make it quite nice to watch. The gore also occasionally works nicely, enough to keep you interested.

The ''man-thing'' also looked nice, it could have been portrayed less, more mystery, but I wouldn't call it really lousy. The CGI does have some significant influences, didn't always look nice (explosion at the end) but overall it wasn't disturbing.

Unfortunately, there is a very thick eco theme on top. The swamp that is threatened, nature fights back like something as a result. I think it's okay to incorporate that, but do it subtly! That is absolutely not the case here and that is against the grain. Everyone gets what they deserve as standard and the hero with his little rosewater head also gets all the clichés thrown at him.

Pretty standard characters again, but I can't expect more. What is funny then is that they choose such an Indian with his rituals to add an explanation. Why? I wouldn't know, I don't get why they just leave it unexplained anyway, it is how it is! That would have been good.

It also has quite a few illogical things and the editing is sometimes quite weak. But it turned out to be a pretty entertaining snack that, especially judging by the score, can be labeled as a windfall.

3*

Man-Thing is a monster film that has been made hundreds, if not thousands, of times. People disappear, are not found or are found severely mutilated. During the movie several more are killed and towards the end the beast is vanquished. The monster eventually looks (of course) hideous, but the massacres (and especially the result) look pretty gruesome. The only really nice thing are the swamps. Quite exaggerated, but the mangroves are wonderfully dark, green and misty and provide the perfect atmosphere for a movie like this. Man-Thing offers absolutely nothing new. The hour and a half are, however, entertaining, but that's about it.

A film that is highly underrated. He was able to captivate me from start to finish, the time flew by and that is a good sign. A tad predictable in retrospect, but the tension is kept in due to the various seedy characters. I don't think the acting is bad, but I especially like the camera work. The scary atmosphere in the swamp is well maintained throughout the film and especially the aftermath of the attacks of the monster I found quite scary. Never seen such horribly chopped corpses as in this film, so quite gross in that respect. Pleasant surprise for me. 4 stars because this movie deserves more stars

Also easy to find on DVD.
