The Korean War is coming to an end. Young, idealistic soldier Roy Loomis (Robert Redford) is sent to the front line. There, his fellow soldiers warn him of Raymond Endore (John Saxon) and his protégé Charlie, a local orphan. Endore is a deranged soldier who loves nothing more than to slit the throats of his opponents, but this makes him a very effective weapon of the US military.
