The Event plot
The female prosecutor Nick Di Vivo (Parker Posey) goes in search of the background of the many suicides that have been taking place in New York lately. One is HIV-infected Matt Shapiro (Don McKellar). His mother (Olympia Dukakis) and friends are left behind with little or nothing to say to Officer Di Vivo, who finds out that the cocktail of drugs that Matt was taking was slowly starting to lose its effect. Entirely under US law, Di Vivo takes the view that suicide is not a solution and that euthanasia is a crime. In the end Di Vivo manages to get hold of a tape on which Matt's farewell party ('the event') is recorded. But even more than that video material, it is the boundless love of Matt's mother that holds up a mirror to the stern prosecutor and confronts her with the true choice between good and evil.
