Les Rendez-vous d'Anna plot

Anna is a twenty-year-old independent woman, single and film-maker by profession. She is constantly on the go. As a sort of salesman, she shows her film here and there and visits friends and acquaintances. We follow her in Cologne, Brussels and Paris, among others.

In three days we travel with the main character from Bottrop to Cologne to Brussels and finally to Paris. Hotels, stations, trains and encounters with a friend, her mother, a friend and some strangers.

With a little good will you could call this a road movie, although director Akerman is not very happy.

The somewhat formal acting takes some getting used to, but it fits well with the rest of the entire film: cold, distant, austere....but certainly a strongly rendered world.

Only my second Akerman film (and the first to convince).

Then soon try Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles the highest rated Akerman film (and with a running time of a hefty 201 minutes).

"Life is a vale of tears," wrote the earthly pessimist Schopenhauer. If you've seen this movie, you could only agree with him. Sadness trumps in this depressing film that perfectly captured the emptiness of the main characters. The clothes of Anna, among others - she looked forty in that stiff suit - also expressed the emptiness. By the way, Anna couldn't smile either, with the exception of the scene in which she was singing for one of the tormented persons. The people we saw in the stations also did not radiate any cheerfulness and what we saw from the train on the way was all gray.

Not a cheerful film, so this very slow film by Akerman. The first I've seen from this director. Whether I'm going to venture into her more than three-hour Jeanne Dielman, I'll have to think about that for a while.

3.0*
