Nice film about a family who perform together with great success. An old-fashioned Hollywood musical with, as expected, a lot of singing and dancing. The story is thin, but there are plenty of beautiful musical scenes (despite the songs not really impressing). Beautiful costumes and sometimes quite funny in a corny way.

Everything you would expect from a musical from the golden age of Hollywood. At least one big name (Marilyn Monroe), compositions by one of the greats of the jazz/entertainment era (Irving Berlin), mass spectacle on stage… I even think this plot for a musical is well worked out. Usually that's a hard point between songs but here I think it's decent with this mix of love and family drama. Marilyn Monroe is and was the star of this movie. She is not the best singer nor the best dancer but she is quite sexy in what she does. Her total package is more than fine. For me, Donald O'Connor is the one who has something extra to offer in this film. Not so much as a singer, but with his dynamic dance act. Unfortunately, he only has one chance to fully show his talent (the scene after he kissed Monroe) although he is also great in the act with Monroe and his screen sister Mitzi Gaynor. Who does get a lot of attention is Ethel Merman. Technically a good singer, but unfortunately she sounds a bit shrill to my ears. Shame. Furthermore, as said, this is a production that is 'finished'. Entertaining.

Hollywood Musical movies in the 50s have stuck in the 30s and I think they are well aware of that. It is a look back at vaudeville and theater acts that hope to win over a new audience. There's no business like show business therefore has less of a story, but is a ride full of colorful acts. Even the numbers come from the old box. With Marilyn Monroe and Donald O'Connor you have two strong names that are certainly not doing badly. But the whole thing has little to do and it is difficult to keep the attention. The songs and the choreography are not that strong either. One to skip. There are much better films in this genre and with these actors.
