"A MOTHER SHOULD PROTECT HER CHILD"

A lesbian couple with a baby daughter moves into an apartment in an old building complex. The atmosphere is awkward from the start. This primarily has to do with the somewhat tense relationship between the lesbian couple. This also has to do with the other residents of the complex, who behave strangely.
Small tensions and irritations are visible from the start. Leah is pregnant. Her partner June, who has expressed her preference for a boy, is away a lot because of her work. Moving, furnishing the apartment and caring for the daughter who is already present rest on her shoulders. She feels alone.
The film captures the feeling of isolation and oppression beautifully in its depiction of the apartment. The feeling is echoed in the high bare ceilings, the large empty wall surfaces, the unpacked boxes and the sparse furnishings. It's not exactly pleasant. The austere soundtrack that sometimes plays does not make it any more pleasant. In that nasty atmosphere, Leah discovers more and more strange secrets that the building holds. Secrets that also directly relate to her situation. There seems to be some kind of conspiracy against her by the people in her immediate environment. Or are there perhaps dark forces at work? Or are the tiring times behind her causing her to perceive things that are not there?
So psychological horror. A film that is clearly based on the novel “Rosemary's Baby” by Ira Levin and the film of the same name by Roman Polanski from 1968. Atmospherically done, but also quite straightforward and mindful, both works are not entirely unpredictable. Also a film without captivating scenes. That non-committing aspect also applies to the finale. It is staged in a rather rushed and somewhat uninspired manner. Not a finale that will stay in my head for long. I fear that the film as a whole will also suffer that fate quite quickly.
