Director Amos Gitai based Kippur on his own military experiences during the actual Yom Kippur War. Gitai was part of a rescue team that was hit by a Syrian missile in a helicopter, wounding him. This experience eventually led to a war registration, but unfortunately the interpretation is not very interesting. Kippur is a combination of artistic painting images and drawn-out war scenes that drag on for a sadly long time, especially in the second half. The approaching rocket impacts as the soldiers move through the battlefield are impressive, even though you see little of the actual war. Those are the most atmospheric images you'll get, though, because the fill is anything but. Gitai introduces several very boring characters who are all very similar in personality. The rescue operations that take up most of the second half also become repetitive so quickly that it is quite a task for the viewer to get through them. Kippur is the result of a maker who hopes to paint as realistic a picture of the war as possible, but has no idea how to make such a film proceed. It results in an event that is truly unbearable.
