A completely unjustly under-the-radar masterpiece.

Perhaps the language barrier plays a key role in this—there's still a boundary between the Latin languages and the Germanic-Anglo-Saxon, and in the arts, both large and small, we're clearly pulling on the short straw here. Fortunately, with my marginal grasp of French and Italian, I just manage to follow this film, and what a world it opens up, by the way, even though I only speak a few words. Thanks in no small part to my parents, who thought HAVO was enough for me—I had to work, and put food on the table.

Oh yeah, the film. One of Bergès-Frisbey's best performances I've seen so far—and thankfully, her initially rather thin, torn-off face undergoes a transformation into something more wholesome. And she also gets some strong counterplay from Germano—which I'd never really noticed before, despite his 47 or so credits. That language barrier again.

The story reads like a modern-day version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet—the lovers both know perfectly well that the other is the least sensible choice, but they see no other, there is no other, it can't be otherwise, and it's death or glory. I've rarely seen such a powerful story, and by the time I read the titles, I was in tears. This is such a film. How is it possible that no one here has seen it, I ask. Two voices in ten years.
