Fine, yes.

Chang in a contemporary (read: 20th-century) setting usually isn't great, but this film is more or less the exception that proves the rule. Perhaps because the focus is still on the fighting, or perhaps because it's set in the early 20th century, it still feels a little less contemporary.

I think the soundtrack also plays a part. The heavy clashing of cymbals (or whatever instrument that is) instantly reminds me of martial arts films with a historical setting. These are all elements that don't have much impact on their own, but together they create a different atmosphere.

Here and there I found the film a bit too slow, and as a thriller/noir it's also less successful, but the focus is still on several powerful fight scenes, which Chang has always excelled at. Delightful, long, and intense scenes, the type that made the Shaw Bros. popular. It's no wonder, then, that Chang has become one of the most important Shaw Bros. directors.

This is a nice video, it's been a while since I've seen a nice Chang, so this one was welcome.

One of the first films where David Chiang and Ti Lung appear together and where deception and deception play a major role.

Ti Lung plays a Chinese opera performer. During one of his performances, a teacher from another school makes advances toward his wife. The next day, he visits the school in question and makes it clear that he doesn't appreciate this. A few days later, he is ambushed in a vicious surprise attack from behind in a teahouse. His eyes are cut out, and he dies on the spot. David Chiang sets out to find the killers to avenge his older brother.

A great revenge film, with little kung fu, but plenty of knives and axes. You can hear some James Bond music here and there. We also see Chen Kuan-tai in a cameo as a bad guy.
