Well, what happens when the people you depend on don't give or are at home for a while. The painful fall of this proud Leo, whose character is apparently his destiny (or vice versa), has been beautifully meticulously portrayed.

That this person does not go through catharsis, or learn from the experience, becomes hilariously clear in the film's ending. With the twist in his fortunes, his gloomy stammering about the filth of the city and the people is silenced in an instant, and he throws himself into the snazzy sports car as easily as he was into the beggar's pram a moment before.

Very good. I am ashamed to admit that this is only my first acquaintance with Rohmer. It won't be the last movie I see of him.

Rohmer hated going on vacation. Why look up the boring campaign when you live in bustling Paris? If we are to believe his films, however, there is a compelling social convention in the Parisian beau monde to exchange city life for the open air every summer. Surrounded by those gray concrete blocks you can't enjoy the beautiful weather, can you? Neat people prefer the healthy mountain air. "Il reste que des clochards!" says one of the characters at the beginning of Le Signe du Lion ominously. The message therefore seems clear: those who stay behind in Paris during the summer months will perish like a bum.

Another Rohmer set in Paris, typical of his films in the 1960s. Later he exchanges the city for the countryside or the holiday atmosphere. And Rohmer goes even further, after 14 films I've already seen from him, a rather unique film that is not about sex and love relationships for once. One that is also a lot less airy and has a fairly serious undertone.

Just like in L'Amour l'Après-Midi (Film, 1972) again that clever depiction of Paris in the 1960s-1970s with fashionable stained glass windows, the many passers-by, the 2 Pk's, R4 and iconic Citroëns.

No light-heartedness, but a film in which the tramp's existence is central through a man who sold the skin of the bear before he was shot and orders a debauched life built on castles in the air. A Paris that also knows another side of glamor and glitter, that of the gray concrete blocks, plastered bridge pillars and ragged clochards.

For me undoubtedly one of the best Rohmers, but not a classic Rohmer in any case.
